Money Making Online Businesses Don't Just Happen

Creating success online is not dependent on one magic bullet.

We are constantly pummeled online with one program or another that promises to make us rich nearly overnight. We have become a society that expects near instant result with most everything, and with as little work as possible.

Growing work from home online businesses is very cost effective, and can be both easier and faster than developing a business offline.

But we are talking business here, and should expect that it will take some time and a lot of concentrated effort if we are to find success.

It is necessary, if you are to be successful in an online business, to have the passion and drive to be both self-motivated and tenacious enough to hang with it and make it successful.

If you are in the beginning stages of starting a home based internet business do understand that it will not happen overnight, and it will take a focused effort if you want to develop a real and lasting online income.

Be ready to:

1. Focus on keyword research and utilize it in the selection of the right market and products to answer the needs of an existing market. If there is no demand for your first choice, move on and find a market that is already established.

2. Focus on search engine optimization and create web pages that appeal to visitors while also pleasing the search engines.

3. Focus on how to set up an appealing website that is easy to navigate and loads quickly.

4. Focus on ways to get lots of backlinks to your home based online business. This will take time and concentrated effort unless your budget can handle outsourcing this task. Backlinks are very necessary if you are going to get good positioning in the search engines.

5. Continually promote your home based internet business even after you have gotten ranking and good positioning on the search engines. Without ongoing effort, you could be have good positioning today and be hard to find next week.

6. Add content or update your business website on a frequent basis both to keep visitors coming back and also to keep the interest of search engine spiders.

7. You can also use what you have learned in your keyword research and place ads in PPC to bring even more traffic.

These are some of basic efforts you should expect to put into your work from home business to make it a success, and keep it that way.

When you have accomplished all of this give yourself a pat on the back. You are out in front of many who might have been successful, but gave up when they found that there was work involved and that it does take a fair amount of time to get a real start.

Now that you have the gist of what it requires, the sensible thing to do is start over and find yet another market need that you can fulfill and diversify your business by adding another department and another source of revenue.

The Process Of Thinking And Home Based Business Work

Nowadays it does not have a difficulty in starting an online business. The most a common procedure is to make a search in the Google for a work from home. Thousands of opportunities will go to appear in the screen of its computer.

Perhaps the biggest difficulty is to give continuity, to persist in the proper business. And it requires organizing the thought, what many gurus call mindset.

Our form to think is related to our human being nature. However, the term nature is ambiguous, therefore it closely relate contexts of biological order, what it gives the meaning to it of that if keeps unalterable, something for beyond the change.

On the other hand, a singular aspect of the humanity is that the human beings are, in certain way, changeable for nature.

This has implications in our behavior. That is, the human being behavior more than any behavior of other beings livings creature, it is less directed by an innate pulse and more guided by impulses shaped for the individual experience and knowledge.

We can translate knowledge for learning. We have then two concepts very important to understand the human behavior. Experience and learning.

Experience as something acquired not only for external factors, but for also auto reflections, evaluations, error and rightness analyses produced in previous activities.

The learning is considered as renewed element of the human being. For being of changeable nature, the human being meets itself open to the new knowledge. And this becomes itself transforming of its social, politician, economic and cultural environment.

Thus, the process of our thought is associated with our experience and learning. In the particular case to start a home based business work, to have success is necessary to have persistence.

To persist suggests to resist. But it means to resist from what? The opening of a new business requires work, information, creativity, determination and belief. The person who goes to open the proper business needs to believe in that it is making. The adversities are many and it is the moment of the resistance, of the strong persistence of the warrior.

The persistent entrepreneur is somebody that stubbornly opposes to give up its projects.

Thus, the entrepreneur who is starting a new business processes its thought of persistent form, programming itself to face the adversities. It uses its proper experience, the experience of other people and dedicates to learn new knowledge about the products that it intends to resell.

I believe that to fight the adversities with persistence it also means to act constantly in the direction of the traced goals. There is an important phrase that it says that in life and in Internet marketing, it does not matter what you know. It only matters what you do.

It does not mean that what we learn is worthless or valley less of what people make. Definitively it is not. The biggest wealth that we conquer is the knowledge that we create and learns.

The main meaning of this phrase or its better value is the force of the action. That is, we have that we act using our knowledge. In this in case that, to act it means to take a business plan and follow it, using the best and more powerful possible tools.

I believe when you set your mind on this direction the sky is not the limit for your success.

What Is A Home-Based Business

Before you can hope to find a home based business, it really helps if you know what a business is compared to what you're used to which is most likely a job. Being successful in a home based business may require you to think differently than you're used to. By understanding the difference between business ownership and employment, you can position yourself for success.

As the employee of a company you are considered to be an expense. As long as the company makes more money than what you cost, you are a justifiable expense. The reason that layoffs occur is that the total expense of employment exceeds the profitability of the company. The result is downsizing.

When you're the business owner such decisions about profitability become your responsibility.

The ideal home-based business allows you to leverage your time to develop an income. The only employee might be. Perhaps your family might be involved. For occasional tasks like bookkeeping you may hire professional help. Just like with any business a home-based business owner needs to keep an eye on expenses and focus on growth.

Most successful home-based businesses are based on network marketing. The reason for this is network marketing creates an opportunity to build a business that does not involve inventory, extensive recordkeeping, employee overhead, and provides the benefit of a residual income that generates a regular check month after month.

It is this residual income that truly characterizes a business versus mere employment.

Some people may sell knickknacks online or stuff envelopes from home. Unless there is the potential of these tasks generating a continuous stream of income then they are only jobs which are worked from home and are not characteristic of a business.

When seeking a home-based business opportunity, be sure to understand how a residual income will grow over time. Good network marketing companies provide compensation plans that combine a short term combination of bonuses which reward you for the harder work that you do early on, with residual income bonuses that grow over time as your home-based business grows.

Bookkeeping From Home - Make Money At Home Doing Basic Bookkeeping

Bookkeeping as a full time career or part time job is a perfect way for people to earn money working at home. You can take up a bookkeeping career from home without having to buy any expensive equipment or worry about planning consents or increased insurance for your premises. Bookkeeping is not hard to do, anyone with the ability to do simple arithmetic will be able to learn to be a bookkeeper. If you are tidy and methodical and enjoy bringing order to chaos, a career as a bookkeeper could be ideal for you. If you are prepared to study, you can obtain a bookkeeping qualification studying from home or taking a part time course at a local college.

Many people who have no formal bookkeeping training do bookkeeping work from home quite successfully. Indeed, many small business owners who are sole traders do their own bookkeeping at home for their annual tax returns. To do bookkeeping for a small business, it is necessary to know and be able to apply the various rules of taxation etc. and keeping a clear accurate record of all income and expenses of the business. Doing basic bookkeeping for others as your own small home based business can be financially rewarding but, if you are ambitious and want a well-paid career from home as a freelance bookkeeper, you should first study to gain a bookkeeping qualification.

Bookkeeping Law And Tax

Every business, large and small, is required by law to keep books of accounts. This involves the recording of all financial transactions of a business. This can be done manually using ledgers, or by entering the figures into spreadsheets on a computer or by using dedicated bookkeeping software.

As well as the legal requirement for a business to keep books, the bookkeeping records are needed by the business owners for them to know exactly how profitable the business is and if there are areas that need financial adjustments. A vital element of bookkeeping is ensuring that the correct amount of tax is paid at the appropriate time in order to avoid financial penalties.

Bookkeeping In A Shoe Box

There are millions of small business owners (sole traders in particular) who rely on manual bookkeeping. For a large number of these traders, bookkeeping means saving invoices, estimates, receipts, utility bills and odd scraps of paper in a shoe box. When tax time comes around, the shoe box is handed over to a bookkeeper who will (as if by a miracle) transform the mess into a neat record of the business's financial dealings. Many small business owners prefer to wokr at their business instead of spending time preparing their own accounting records to go with their collection of receipts.

If a small business owner hands the shoe box straight to an accountant, the basic bookkeeping tasks will be charged at the accountant's hourly rate. For this reason a good bookkeeper, who will charge a more modest hourly rate, will always be in demand to write up the books and collate the paperwork (even by owners of limited companies who need the services of a qualified accountant to file their annual accounts).

Bookkeeping Software

Many businesses (even quite small concerns) use bookkeeping software to keep their books because the software is inexpensive and easy to use. The use of bookkeeping software does not replace the need for a bookkeeper, it merely makes the bookkeeper's job easier: The software cannot do the job of a human brain. Bookkeeping software needs human intervention to work properly, a software program won't know for itself things like what items can legitimately be offset against tax.

Bookkeeper As A Career

People of any age and background can become bookkeepers and work from home as freelancers. Many are mothers wanting a well-paid career running a bookkeeping business from home whilst bringing up their family. Some are seniors who want to keep active or need extra income to supplement their pensions. For young persons looking for a good career, a bookkeeping professional qualification can be the first step to becoming a qualified accountant and this opens doors to all sorts of well-paid career opportunities.

Bookkeeping Classes

Bookkeeping classes are available at most local colleges or you can choose to follow a distance learning program. Taking a bookkeeping course online is a very convenient way to study alongside other commitments. Taking a bookkeeping course on the Internet is a highly flexible way of obtaining a professional qualification while working at an existing job or looking after children at home. You can study during any hours that suit you and, provided you meet the deadlines, you can complete the assignments when you like.

Bookkeeping Certification

In the USA information regarding certification can be obtained through the American Institute Of Professional Bookkeepers and in the UK through the Institute Of Certified Bookkeepers.

How To Start An Internet Business

Is it really possible to start your own internet business? There are millions of pounds every year being spent by people who have that very question on their mind, yet only a handful start one. Why is that? Well even though it is not hard to start an internet business, most people are not willing to put the effort in to get it off the ground, they are not motivated enough. Some people have learnt how to start an internet business and have built very profitable businesses in 6 months or less on the internet, the opportunities to profit on the web are practically limitless.

So where do you learn how to start an internet business? Well that depends on the type of internet business you want to get involved with, there is little point in learning to capture leads if you want to do Adsense, just as there is little point in learning how to use PPC if you want to use SEO on your site. Let me first discuss some possible business models before we discuss how to start an internet business:

Model #1: Adsense
The heyday of Adsense has past in many people’s minds, it used to be a case of simply creating thousands of pages of junk and you could make thousands of pounds or even hundreds of thousands of pounds every month. Google clamped down on that, but if you are not trying to trick the people who are searching for information on the internet then you will be rewarded with a solid income.

For those that do not know what Adsense is, then it is a scheme run by Google whereby you put small adverts on your webpages, if someone clicks one of those ads you get paid a set amount of money. There is a lot of good information out there to allow you to profit from Adsense, just make sure that you provide good content for the user and do not break any of Google’s rules.

Model #2: Affiliate marketing
This is the type of business that most people start when they are learning how to start an internet business. You help people that sell products on the internet by driving traffic to their sites through a special link, if any of those people buy then you get paid a certain percentage of the sale. This can go as high as 75% for digital products so you can see the attraction of this business. Again there are many great books out there that give you the information you need to set this up.

Model #3: Sell physical products
This model definitely involves a bit more work, but the pay off at the end could be far greater. This model would involve you picking a range of physical goods to sell, acquiring them for wholesale prices (or having them made if they are proprietary) and driving traffic to that site to encourage sales. Being the product merchant means you would be able to recruit your own affiliates to work for you to increase your profits.

So there are three extremely profitable business models that you can learn, now to learn how to start an internet business then you are going to need to learn off somebody that has already done it.

The best piece of advice that I can give you to learn how to start an internet business is to explore the online forums, particularly WarriorForum.com where you can learn the best products out there in the field you have chosen. A good forum will be invaluable in your quest to learn how to start an internet business as you can post questions and the other members will be able to give you advice based on their own experiences.

There are pitfalls along the way, you will be learning a new set of skills, which can be daunting to some people. Also there are a lot of poor products out there with extremely misleading sales letters, that is why you need to use the forums to try and find genuine products that will help you learn your business. Mentoring is available, but I would advise learning everything yourself and throwing yourself into it to gain experience, that way if you do decide to get a mentor you will be able to ask deeper more useful questions rather than just learning the basics from them first.

So there you have it, you now know how to start an internet business and the next step is for you to take action and choose a model, then sign up to the Warrior Forum and learn what the best way to proceed for that model would be.

Good luck!

How to Find Work From Home Jobs

The best job sites for finding work at home job postings aren't necessarily the sites that focus on work at home jobs. Many of those sites, unfortunately, do little more than solicit your money. And remember, the first rule of work from home job hunting is never to pay.

Jobs that promise you oodles of money with little investment of time and no experience aren't legitimate. Legitimate work at home jobs are going to require that you have skills relevant to the position. Many jobs require skills like writing, graphic design, programming or web design, for example. If you don't have any experience in the field(s) you are interested in, it's going to be difficult to find an employer willing to hire you. Most employers who are willing to hire someone to work from home want workers who can work independently and get the job done with little guidance.

Check these sites and set up job search agents to have new postings sent to you via email. There are typically a tremendous number of applicants for each position and you will want to be among the first to apply.

Here are some good sites to check regularly for work at home listings:

Company Job Sites
There are lists of the companies that are known to be "telecommuting friendly" and most of these employers list jobs on the web. Check the company web sites for current openings:

WAHS Company List
Telecommuting Employers
Work at Home Job Sites
craigslist
This site is a perennial favorite. There's nothing fancy or significantly searchable. Just a simple list of "real" jobs. Search for freelance positions by entering "freelance" as a keyword in the search box on the front page of the site. Otherwise, click on the city that interests you and review the list of job openings.

Media Bistro
If you are looking for a media position, here's a good place to start. Register (free) to access the job postings, then search using "freelance" as a keyword.

MMM (Money Making Mommy)
Scroll down past the ads for a lengthy list of work at home job postings in a variety of fields.

Sunoasis Jobs
Writing, editing, copywriting, PR, and other positions.

The Top Job Sites
Monster, CareerBuilder, Yahoo! Hot Jobs and the other top job sites all contain work at home job listings. It takes some work just to weed through the postings, but, they are there. Search using keywords like "freelance" "telecommute" "work from home" and "work at home" as well as by the type of work you are interested in. Carefully review the listings you find, because you will find scams can slip through the cracks and get posted on even the best sites.

Writer's Weekly
Writer's Weekly has an excellent selection of freelance writing jobs, articles, a discussion newsletter and a free weekly jobs newsletter.

Work at Home Jobs
More work at home job sites, how to find work at home jobs, how to avoid scams and more information on working from home.

Finally, please take the time to research every job lead you find and every site you visit carefully. Even sites that purport to be impartial sometimes aren't. I just visited a site that supposedly had general information on telecommuting. They recommended their top sites, all of which happened to be affiliated indirectly with the first site and all of which charged a fee.

Checklist for Starting a Business

Checklist for Starting a Business

Most businesses start out small. The checklist below provides the basic steps you should follow to start a business. The list should not be construed as all-inclusive. Other steps may be appropriate for your specific type of business. Refer also to the Small Business Administration's Checklist for Going into Business (PDF).

Apply for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) if applicable.
Select a business structure.
Choose a tax year.
Choose your accounting method.
If you have employees have them fill out Form I-9 and Form W-4. If your employees qualify for and want to receive advanced earned income credit payments, they must give you a completed Form W-5.
Pay your business taxes.

Choosing a Product or Service to Sell

To succeed as an entrepreneur, you must develop the ability to select and offer the right products or services to your customers in a competitive market. More than any other factor, your ability to make this choice will determine your success or failure.

Fully 80 percent of the products and services being consumed today are different from those that were being consumed five years ago. And five years from today, fully 80 percent of the products being used will be new and different from those being used today.

There are thousands of products and services available to consumers today. And there are unlimited opportunities for you to enter the marketplace and compete effectively with a new product or service that's better in some way than what's already being offered by your competitors. Remember, your skill at choosing that product or service is critical to your success.

The most important thing you can do before deciding what to sell is to think. And the more you think about a product or service before you bring it to market, the better your decisions will be.

So how do you start? To make a product successful, you must be personally and emotionally committed to its success. Once you've got a product or service in mind, you need to begin with a self-analysis:

What kinds of products do you like, enjoy, consume and benefit from?
Do you like the product or service you're planning to sell?
Can you see yourself getting excited about this product or service?
Would you buy it and use it yourself?
Would you sell it to your mother, your best friend, your next-door neighbor?
Can you see yourself selling this product or service for the next five to 10 years?
Is this a product or service that you intensely desire to bring to the marketplace?
Then analyze the product or service from the customer's point of view:

What does the product achieve, avoid or preserve for the customer?
How does the product improve your customer's life or work?
What kind of customers will you be selling the product to?
Do you personally like the customers who'll be buying this product or service?
Imagine that you've hired a management consultant to get advice on introducing this new product or service. They're going to cut right to the chase and ask you these very objective, bottom-line questions about the product:

Is there a real demand for the product at the price you'll have to charge?
Is the demand large enough for you to make a profit?
Is the demand concentrated enough so you can advertise, sell and deliver the product at a reasonable expense?
Dig even deeper into the potential success of your product or service by determining the answer to the following critical questions:

What is to be sold, exactly? Describe the product in terms of what it does for the customer.
To whom is the product going to be sold? Describe your ideal customer.
What price will you have to charge for the product for it to be profitable?
Who's going to sell the product?
How is the product to be sold? What method of sales, or process of promotion, will you use?
How is the product or service to be manufactured or produced?
How is the product going to be paid for and by whom?
How is the product or service going to be delivered to the customer?
How is it going to be serviced, repaired, guaranteed or replaced?
And you're not done yet. There are a series of additional questions you need to ask before you make a final decision on a new product or service offering.

Is there a real need for the product or service in today's market?
Is your new product or service better than anything else currently available?
What are the three ways that your product is superior to your competition?
Is your product lower priced or of better quality than anything else that is available?
Do you think you could become the number-one supplier in the market for this product or service?
For a product or service to succeed, it must be the right product, being sold at the right time, to the right customer, in the right market. It must be produced and sold by the right company, and the right people. What you have to decide is this: Is this product right for you?

The Sweet Success of a Chocolate Business

The verdict is in: Chocolate has officially gone from sinful to unstoppable. In fact, trend-watching firm Datamonitor named chocolate "the new coffee" in a list of the top 10 trends to watch. But that's not all: Studies have come out demonstrating the health benefits of flavanoids often contained in dark chocolate. Sales are soaring (dark chocolate sales were up 40 percent in 2006, according to Mintel International), and entrepreneurial opportunities are rich with promise. "Chocolate is more popular today than ever before," says Joan Steuer, founder and president of Chocolate Marketing LLC, a Los Angeles consulting firm that specializes in strategic forecasting and tracking trends in the chocolate industry. So stop drooling and take a bite of the action. Dark, artisanal, organic, socially responsible and nutraceutically enhanced chocolates are especially hot varieties, according to Steuer. Opportunities also exist in chocolate cafes, chocolate fountains and chocolate education, such as tastings. And you can't go wrong with basics like chocolate snacks or a shelf-stable ganache. Says Steuer, "The world of chocolate is wide open for anyone to succeed if they take the right steps."

Getting Started
Thinking of launching your own brand of chocolate? Follow these tips:

Ask yourself three key questions. "Ask yourself, 'Where am I now, where do I want to be and how do I get there?’" advises Joan Steuer, founder of Chocolate Marketing LLC, a Los Angeles consulting firm that specializes in strategic forecasting and tracking trends in the chocolate industry. When answering, refrain from comparing yourself to the competition. Instead, focus on your strengths and your distinguishing qualities.
Pool your resources. Have enough money in the bank to last you at least six months out, recommends Steuer, and form a board of advisors who can offer unbiased advice and suggestions. When forming your board, don't limit yourself to experts within the chocolate industry. Even people from outside of the industry can offer great insight.
Love what you do. "For every entrepreneur, it's always going to be harder than you think it is, and you have to have great love and passion," says Steuer. "Don't just chase chocolate because you think you'll make money. It's hard to make money in chocolate. I work with struggling artisans as well as wildly successful companies."
Keep your eyes wide open. Chocolate, in general, will never lose its appeal, but studies, research and taste buds can change with each passing year, bringing certain types or flavors of chocolate to the forefront. In order to keep up with these trends, Steuer stresses the importance of living consciously. "Don't have blinders on to other industries because that's often from where the best ideas come," says Steuer. "Look at technology and make analogies into our world. Look at art. Go into a container store and look at convenience. Is there a way to package a chocolate bar that peels like a banana so you can get at it more easily without unwrapping it? Those are things that I think about when I come up with ideas. I look at things and I think about the environment. You need to look everywhere for trends, and you'll easily then be leading the market instead of following."
Believe in yourself and your product. "If you think your idea is ahead of its time, chances are that it's a great idea," says Steuer. "It's just a matter of letting people know why they need it and why it's different and better."

Start Your Own Coffeehouse

Whether it's a drip, a latte or a cappuccino, Americans are addicted to their coffee. According to the Specialty Coffee Association of America, specialty coffee was an $11 billion industry in 2005, up from $9.6 billion in 2004. But some historians theorize that what Americans are really looking for in their cup of joe is a sense of belonging. "We spent so much of the post [World War II] period in this country retreating inside suburban houses [with] fenced-in back-yards," says Bryant Simon, a professor at Temple University in Philadelphia who spent a year studying Starbucks. "Coffeehouses play to [the] desire [to be] out, even if you don't talk to anyone."

For Beth Livedoti, 29, Jeff Furton, 29, and Stephanie Lemmo, 28, entering the industry in 2004 meant opening a window--or two. At The Daily Rise Expresso, a double-sided coffee and smoothie drive-thru in Ogden, Utah, customers come for more than a drink. "[Some customers] come in two to three times a day just to talk," says Livedoti. "We are their little piece of sanity." Year-end sales will reach $300,000, a second location opened earlier this year, and franchising is in its future.

If a coffeehouse isn't for you, think products like Java Juice, a liquid extract straight from the bean. Other niches include aftermarket products like Coca-Cola Blak and products that incorporate coffee for its health benefits--caffeine's been linked to decreasing the risk of diabetes, liver cirrhosis, Parkinson's disease and even gallstones.

Getting Started
To brew up success in your own coffeehouse:

Use your size to your advantage. Being small has its benefits--especially when it means you can accomplish what the big players aim to do but sometimes fall short. Study the coffeehouses in your community and examine what they fail at, advises Simon. By doing so, you'll have a better chance of finding your niche.
Aim for excellence. "People clearly want the milieu of a coffeehouse," says Simon. "They want the intellectualism, the music, the art. So do it. Really play music that you haven't heard a million times before, really put up local art on the walls, really emphasize your relationship with the community. If you really want to have a coffeehouse, go out and educate people. People want to know about coffee. It's like wine. Really go and educate your baristas."
Establish a presence in the community. The co-founders of The Daily Rise Expresso make it a point to stay involved in the community--whether it's providing refreshments at the farmer's market, concerts and fourth of July celebrations or donating to local schools and fund-raisers. Says Livedoti, "People start to see us around town, and I think that sets us apart because we support them, so, in turn, they come back to support us."
Don't underestimate your customer. Make sure you do your homework and find quality products in order to truly satisfy your customers. The founders of The Daily Rise Expresso considered 25 to 30 different roasters before making the final selection. "People really know their coffee," says Livedoti. "So it's very important that you're starting out with a good quality bean."
Prioritize customer service. "It's about attention to detail and figuring out what that person wants and what that person is really going to enjoy and what's going to get that person coming back time after time," says Lemmo. "People appreciate that you make an effort to figure out what's going to be the best for them."

Work-From-Home Tips

Whether you're looking to contribute to your family's finances or earn some cash to cover special or unexpected expenses, many people want more ways to make money at home.

From freelance to full-time gigs, we have a range of fields and resources below to help guide you in discovering the options that exist. Only you can decide if an opportunity is right for you.

Don't limit yourself solely to responding to advertised openings. Sometimes the best way to land a home-based job is by calling someone you'd like to work for and offering your services.

Don't Get Scammed
While we're focused on making money, it's also important to note how to avoid losing it, too.

I responded to ads to stuff envelopes that boasted the potential to earn up to $1,500 a week with little effort. Though I was highly skeptical, I bought a dozen different starter kits for $20 to $50 each, figuring one might work.

Each instructed me to mail flyers aimed at recruiting other people to stuff envelopes. I wasn't promoting a product or service; I was just told to get other people to stuff envelopes with the same offer. If they purchased the same kit, I'd receive a commission.

I'm pretty resourceful, yet I couldn't get this to pan out. I didn't get a single cent. Recruiting people to stuff envelopes is the oldest work-from-home gimmick and it fools new people every day. Don't be one of them.

Christine Durst, author of "The Rat Race Rebellion," says her research indicates the ratio of scams to legitimate opportunities is 42-to-1.

That isn't to say that all home-based opportunities that request money up front are rip-offs. Many legitimate direct-sales companies and others that help you start your own business require a start-up fee to cover the cost of training manuals and supplies to get you going.

Before mailing a check or submitting a credit card payment, talk to a live person about the requirements and the realistic earning potential. Also ask about obstacles and challenges.

If you wanted to become a consultant with Mary Kay or Avon, you'd have no trouble finding people willing to talk — not just e-mail you — about how to get started. The same access to information and people should be your standard for any home-based work you consider.

If you are going to send money, ask first about a money-back guarantee. Specifically, find out how you'll have to go about requesting a refund if you're not satisfied and when you'll receive it.

This is especially important for Web sites that require a registration fee for access to listings or for sites that want to sell you an "information packet" or "starter kit."

Check with the Better Business Bureau for any complaints about the company and try to verify the seller's PayPal record. (Similarly, if you have been scammed, be sure to report the nature of your complaint to these outlets as well.)

Do not reveal passwords or personal information. Once you've accepted a job and you opt for direct deposit, you'll have to provide your bank account number, but this information isn't relevant in the application process.

Beyond that, you should never reveal passwords and PINs for banking information or PayPal accounts, even though many online scams request these details. They claim they're only requesting it to determine whether you're an honest applicant. Don't fall for that nonsense.

Remember that just because an ad or posting appears on a seemingly reputable Web site doesn't mean the opportunity has been verified for legitimacy. The big job boards and a wide range of work-from-home Web sites are rich in resources. Yet they often feature ads and links that aren't vetted for accuracy.

With an abundance of opportunities out there, no single source can possibly verify the validity of every opportunity. You must do your own research, inject a big dose of common sense, and follow the advice here to avoid getting ripped off.

Even with all of these warnings, the reality is that good, honest opportunities exist. Just do your homework to make sure it's right for you before signing on.

Virtual Customer-service Agent
A growing work-from-home opportunity is to answer the inbound customer calls for companies like J. Crew, 1-800-flowers, Virgin Atlanta or Walgreens. These major players and many others like them outsource their customer-service calls to companies that hire U.S.-based virtual agents.

Set your own hours and pick an account that's ideally suited to your knowledge and interests. In addition to having a pleasant voice and strong customer-service skills, you must have high-speed Internet access, a computer, a landline, and a quiet place to work — all of which you pay for on your own.

Expect to make an average of between $8 and $15 an hour depending on your experience, call volume and accounts. Be prepared to work a minimum of 20 hours per week, although some agents work 40 hours to 60 hours when their schedule permits.

Alpine Access hires virtual agents as employees. Other companies, including LiveOps, West and Willow CSN hire agents as independent contractors. All of these companies hire year-round, and they're all eager for talent as they prepare for a very busy holiday season.

Create Your Own Product Line
Ever dream of seeing your slogans and artwork on T-shirts, mugs or hats? You can turn that dream into reality — and into cash — without investing even a penny in expensive start-up costs like equipment and stock.

Submit your original ideas and art online to Web sites like zazzle.com, cafepress.com and others, and you'll receive commission on all sales generated with your designs.

Do this for T-shirts, mugs, kids' accessories, housewares, posters, stickers and so much more. In addition to securing orders from strangers who visit those sites, you can also make money by doing some proactive promotion of your own. Encourage your friends and family to place orders, and get them to e-mail all of their friends, too, by forwarding links to your products.

Channel Your Inner Judge Judy
Instead of spending time watching the courtroom programs on TV, make money while determining verdicts as an online juror. Lawyers deciding whether or not to accept a case or looking for preliminary feedback on cases they're currently handling use various Web sites as a cost-effective tool for research and focus groups before heading into a real courtroom.

Sites including eJury.com, OnlineVerdict.com, ZapJury.com, and TrialPractice.com pay nominal fees to home-based e-jurors, ranging from $10 to $60, depending on the length of the e-trial. Research all of the sites and read the requirements before signing on to serve.

Transcribe Audio to Text
Speeches, lectures, television and radio programs and interviews must be converted to text that's delivered in a timely and accurate way. If you possess exceptional English language and grammar skills and you're an experienced typist with a speed of at least 75 words per minute, you could transcribe audio to text. Some businesses may require you to take a transcription test before offering you opportunities to work. Most assignments are handled on a freelance basis. Sites to explore include ProductionTranscripts.com, ModernDayScribe.com, TigerFish.com and AliceDarling.com. Find others by searching online.

Talk Tech
If you're an experienced information technology professional and you enjoy problem-solving and quality customer service, you may be able to work from home providing tech support via phone, online and in person to customers nationwide.

As an independent contractor or employee (this varies per company), you'd work from your own home office, set your own hours, and service clients in your area. ComputerAssistant.com, GeeksOnTime.com, PlumChoice.com are some of the companies to explore.

Driving for Dollars
I'm not talking about becoming a taxi driver or chauffeur — you can make money by driving your normal route while allowing your car to feature advertisements.

Specially created decals are provided to drivers to affix to the back window. Depending on your location and the amount of driving you do — usually a minimum of 1,000 miles a month is required — you can earn $50 to $150 a month by "renting out" this space on your car. You can make even more money — up to $500 a month — by allowing your car to be fully wrapped with an advertiser's images and message.

Search online using keywords "car wrap advertising" to locate opportunities nationwide. Don't be shy about calling around to compare rates and advertising opportunities to find the best fit for you. Never settle on the first company you find since there could be a more lucrative option available to you.
